ZOOM F8n Pro: 32-bit 8-channel field recorder with dual AD converters ZOOM Corp announced the new F8n Pro, a 32-bit 8-channel field recorder with dual AD converters. This appears to be its flagship field recorder, towering over the F8n. For the time being, the announcement is only for Japan. But I trust Zoom’s plans for the F8n Pro reach globally. Here’s more about the unit… The F8n Pro records 8 channel inputs and up to 10 tracks (8ch + L/R) of audio simultaneously at a resolution up to 32-bit, 192kHz in WAV format. The unit has onboard BNC timecode I/O and can be powered via 8 AA batteries, external DC power supply, or 12V AC adapter. The F8n Pro also functions as an 8-in / 4-out USB audio interface with 32-bit recording support. It’s able to record to computer or a pair of SD card slots for cards sizing up to 1TB each.
The 8 channel inputs use Zoom’s preamps with a maximum gain of 75dB, Neutrik XLR / TRS combo connectors and lock mechanisms. A built-in limiter is available to prevent overloads. There’s also the ZOOM auto mix function which automatically adjusts the level of inputs (if you want that). Each channel has an independent track knob, 6-segment LED level meter, and PFL / Solo switch. The F8n Pro features two mini XLR (TA3) balanced main outputs and a stereo mini-sub output, as well as a headphone jack with volume control. Further metering and information is provided via 2.4″ full-color backlit LCD with monochrome mode support. There’s also a built-in slate microphone / slate tone generator. The resolution and input count makes recording 360° spatial audio a real possibility using a VR microphone and the built-in Ambisonic recording mode. Additionally, remote control from the ‘F8 Control’ mobile application is supported via Bluetooth connection. Belonging to ZOOM’s ecosystem, the unit pairs with the F-Contro mixer controller and ZOOM microphone capsules (however, the XAH-8, EXH-8, VRH-8 are not supported). I’ve never ever been around location recording but I imagine the pros will be pleased by the possibilities offered with the ZOOM F8n Pro. Price and availability The ZOOM F8n Pro is currently only available in Japan, priced YEN 148,000 (around USD 1280). The first batch is already sold out and the units are on back-order. A global announcement is yet to happen. |
