Slate Digital FG-Dynamics plug-in: never too late for an SSL comp? Slate Digital dropped FG-Dynamics, a plug-in capturing the channel dynamics section from an SSL 4K-series analog console. No, it’s not the infamous bus compressor we’re talking about, but the channel dynamics with compressor and expander/gate sections. These slay just as much as the G-comp, but aren’t as legendary for some reason. Anyway… ADVERTISEMENT Slate Digital FG-Dynamics FG-Dynamics is pretty straightforward, adjusting makeup gain automatically so you can hear changes with each adjustment. The Compressor has Threshold, Ratio, and Release controls as well as Hard knee and Fast attack switches. It’s a snappy, punchy compressor that’s hardly surgical but it sure brings the hammer down.
Next, the Gate section has the Range, Threshold, and Release knobs with Fast attack and Expander/Gate switches. You can accomplish some interesting effects along the lines of transient shaping with it. Finally, there’s a Mix knob to blend the dry and processed sounds with, and an Out knob to adjust output level. Other than the Mix knob, Slate Digital hasn’t tampered with the original concept. Whether you like that or prefer some meaningful innovation on top of the realistic impressions is all up to you. FG-Dynamics is a valuable addition for Slate Virtual Mix Rack users. VMR also includes the SSL 4K-series console EQ, bus compressor, and analog summing, so the dynamics section completes the British voicing. If you are not into VMR or the rest of Slate Digital’s formidable line-up, that’s cool. There are many other ways to get your SSL fix, including the console dynamics section in particular.
